Snow Much Fun!

It has been freezing and snowing nonstop for days now! Between being out for Christmas break, the snow and cold, and having strep throat I have personally not been on my normal routine for over a month now and it's driving me a little insane! We've been on a two-hour delay at work all week and my poor kiddos haven't been on their routines either. Anyone who's spent a good amount of time with children under the age of 5 can tell you that those kids need routine and structure.

What happens when they don't get it? They go a little crazy. And it's okay.

One of the best parts about my job is the unpredictability of it all. I love those moments in the classroom where things aren't exactly going according to plan. They make for the best teachable moments.

So with all this snow and cold I decided to venture away from our friendship theme for the day and go back to a few weeks ago when we talked about snow. The bin for our discovery table is removable so I took it outside and filled it up with snow. I brought it back in and the kids were mesmerized. I had them in a circle on the carpet around the table and began teaching them about snow with actual snow! They were so excited! When I brought out cups for them to get to play in it, I thought my heart would melt at the joy in their eyes. I love teaching! As they got to explore it hands on, I asked them questions about the snow. "How does it feel?" "What color is it?" Is it hot or cold?" "What happens to snow when it melts?" (we covered that in our previous theme) "Where does the snow come from?" "Can it snow when it's hot outside?" "What do we wear in the snow?" and many more. I got all kinds of enthusiastic answers amidst the giggles and squeals. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they handled the snow. Very little made it's way out of the bin and there was no throwing of the snow. I call that a success!

Something as easy as collecting snow made for a wonderful classroom activity that kept the children busy while my co-teachers prepared lunch. I'm so thankful for my kiddos and the opportunity that I have to teach them!
